An Italian line ship with a rather uneventful history, and overshadowed by her sister SS Rex, the Conte di Savoia was sunk and scrapped in the 1940's.

Conte di Savoia was launched on 18 October 1931. Everything went according to plan—at least until the liner nearly exploded on her maiden voyage. Italian Line's 48,500 GRT Conte di Savoia was 814.5 feet long and 96 feet at beam. She was similar to, but slightly smaller than Rex, completed just two months earlier.

Conte di Savoia was styled as the more luxurious of the two. Two ships were commissioned with a post war subsidy. The Andrea Doria first sailed the Atlantic in the winter of 1953. Her sister Cristoforo Colombo launched a year later. They were nearly identical at more than 29,000 tons.

"CONTE DI SAVOIA" was completed in 1932 and left on her maiden voyage to New York in November of that year, photo above, she was 48.500 G.T and had a very impressive top speed of 27.3 knots. This beautiful ship was the first one to have gyroscopic stabilizers fitted to try and reduce the rolling during Transatlantic Crossings on the North.

The S.S. Conte di Savoia was a true floating palace. "Our state room was wallpapered in gold brocade, and all the blankets and spreads were crimson in color. During the trip, we especially enjoyed the company of a very nice Italian priest: Father Rinaldi became our chaperone and proved very helpful when we visited Casablanca and Monaco.
